Family Law Legal Actions

We know that a family law dispute cuts to the core of a person’s life.

No one chooses to divorce or legally separate lightly. We counsel clients on the legal and emotional issues that arise during divorce. We know how difficult it is to address these issues. We understand that a divorce or separation is a life changing event. We strive to help our clients resolve the legal issues while creating a new and positive future. Our goal is to inform out clients about they law so that they can use the law to create the best possible future for themselves.

We understand that in custody disputes, parenting or visitation actions, or child support modifications the parties have a future relationship to create or maintain. We help our clients negotiate agreements that are workable and lasting. We believe in informing and empowering our clients. Any attorney can promise you a good fight in court, our focus is not on the fight but on finding solutions that allow our clients to move on with the joy of living.

We use negotiation and mediation where possible to help parties resolve their differences. When negotiation and mediation do not provide out clients with the desired outcome, we advocate aggressively for our clients in litigation.

We recommend that all family law clients consider the process of Collaborative Law at the beginning of any family law action. Collaborative Law is a dispute resolution process that saves our clients the excessive cost of court intervention while allowing them to create workable, long-term agreements. Please see our page on Collaborative Law for more information.

Cohabitation and Prenuptial Agreements

We have found that couples who are willing to discuss sensitive topics around money and property create a foundation of honesty and openness in their relationship that enables them to weather difficult issues that inevitable arise in the future of any long-term relationship. Lets be honest, in this day and age, it is folly to pretend that we know what the future will bring. We are available to help you figure out how to embrace your next relationship with an open heart and mind.

A cohabitation or prenuptial agreement is a contract that spells out both parties understanding of what property and debt is being brought into the relationship and how that property and debt should be characterized in the future. A cohabitation or prenuptial agreement is recommended for anyone entering a live-in relationship (whether married or not) who owns any property, real or personal. Developing a clear agreement about who owns what can alleviate confusion, disappointment and hurt feelings in the future, particularly where either or both parties have children from other relationships. If you have questions about what is “property” and want to discuss what might be best for your relationship, please call our office.
